Guinea pigs are herbivores,which mean they do not eat anything but vegetable matter.They need a meal of fresh fruit &veg every day to supply Vitamin C.Just like us humans they have a daily need for this essential vitamin.
VEGETABLE MATTER
Whether bought or piccked fresh this must be:
* Unfrozen
* Clean
*Free from contamination by crop spraying,animal waste (poo,urine) etc
* Fresh,no yellowing (causes upset stomachs)
*Mildew/mould free
Vitamin C can be added to their water but they shouldn't need it if fed a good fresh diet alongside piggy muesli/nuggets.
HAY
This is essential to a guinea pig.It acts as a rougage,aiding digestion and gives them constant nibbling material.This helps keep their teeth down too. It must be good quality soft,sweet and free of mould and thistles.
Cereal Mixes
* Vitamin C added to any product has a very short shelf life.
* Guinea pigs thrive on variety in the form of vegetables,fruit salad and wild plant.
DO NOT use hamster mixes ,as peanuts and sunflower seeds are not suitable,or rabbit mixes containing ACS (an anti-coccidiosis medication) as this is toxic to guinea pigs.
Do add to your dry mix as a change from time to time pasture mix .
